Advancing the Green Hydrogen Economy - 28 July 2022

A Special Session - as part of the 8th Global Review of Aid for Trade

Standards development for the Hydrogen Supply Chain in developing countries

The webinar was organized on 16 March 2023 by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Hydrogen Council. The webinar aimed to call for action in countries that are not participating in ISO Technical Committees such as TC 197 “Hydrogen Technologies”, to engage in international hydrogen-related standards setting. As such, the webinar seeked to collect insights highlighting the need for developing countries to build capacity and knowledge in developing international standards on low carbon hydrogen. The webinar addressed specifics on safety standards for built environment, road mobility, industrial applications and on conducting a methodology assessment for determining the Greenhouse Gas Emissions associated with the production, conditioning, and transport of hydrogen to its application.

IAEA-UNIDO session at IVECF: Alternative solutions for just energy transition: low carbon hydrogen

Cost-effective, low carbon hydrogen can effectively contribute to the reduction of economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions, boosting energy security, and complementing the integration of clean energy sources in the global energy mix. Low-carbon hydrogen can provide a scalable and reliable baseload source of both electricity and heat to support the efficient production of hydrogen through different processes to meet increasing energy demand and complementing intermittent renewable energy sources, making it an effective solution for large-scale, global energy systems transformation. The discussion also focused on the challenges to the deployment of such technologies and discuss solutions on how low-carbon hydrogen could advance industrialization and develop domestic sustainable value chains in developing countries.
